Monday:
I skipped Monday last week because I ran out of room, but we taught Maribel again and she told us more about what she is suffering with.  She has to take some medication, and that medication has hallucinations as side effects, so we had to teach her outside the little room we normally teach her in.  I think this was nice for all of us.  I wish we could talk to her in English, and actually help her with what she's actually struggling with, but sometimes the most we can offer is a sad smile and a "Lo siento."  But I honestly think the best thing that she needs is someone that will listen to her, and Elder Roderick and I love listening to her.  She always leaves us with the biggest smile on our face.  Maribel loves talking about how Mormons have so many kids, and that when Rod comes home, he will find a wife, and they will have lots of "Roderick-itos" ha! We all laugh pretty hard.

Tuesday:
We had Breakfast at the Temple today and it was delicious to say the least.  We miss real food..
Tonight's Devotional was from Elder Juan A. Uceda.  He is a member of the 70, and he spoke a lot about the power of the Book of Mormon.  As he was telling us about the first time he read the Book of Mormon and the way he shared his experience, we could still feel his excitement from the first time he read it.  He talked about how he still needs a lot of work to be like Christ, and it is really humbling to get to here someone so wonderful say that he has a long ways to go too.

Wednesday:
Today was a little rough, because it is sometimes hard to get back into Spanish after P-Day.  I also kind of realized that it is ok for missionaries to not be 100% confident in the gospel all the time, because even though we have such wonderful spiritual experiences, we also go through a lot of doubt.  But that's ok, because we stay here anyway and we fight through the doubt!
This day was rough, but as I write this a week later, I feel much better!

Thursday:
I learned some personal lessons today, so I don't have too much to write about.  But late at night we heard a mysterious beeping noise, so we went to go look for it, and it turns out the emergency phone on our floor was making the sound that happens after you leave the phone off the receiver too long.  So we unplugged the phone... and we still heard a less frequent, softer, higher in tone beep that none of us could locate.  Only 4 of us were still awake and we got very freaked out looking for it, so we just decided it would be best to go to sleep.   We decided that the MTC definitely has ghosts.  Or spirits at least.  They're definitely friendly ones, though, it was just past our bed time!

Friday:
Our friend Elder Doney went home today.  He was struggling with some health issues in his bones, and after being here, his condition worsened.  It was sad to see him leave because he definitely works harder than any of us, so why would he be the one to leave?  We agreed that he already proved that he would've been an excellent missionary.  Right before he left, he was filled with so much hope and happiness, that even though he couldn't continue being a missionary, it somehow felt ok.  We have to keep in mind the bigger picture--we are here on Earth to be tested, (and for us, not necessarily to just serve missions).

Saturday:

We all switched comps today because our teacher made us go on splits! I got to be with Elder Whiting for the day.  He's from GRANTsville so he's alright. He's a really nice kid and we had a great day.
Our teacher had us pretend to be someone we know that isn't a member or isn't active, so that other missionaries in our class could teach us and we could practice being in the shoes of those we teach.  It was really cool to be able to put myself behind the feelings and emotions and see how someone else would help them solve the things they need help with!

Sunday:

Remember how I wasn't feeling well on Tuesday?  Well I went to talk to my President, President Price, here in the MTC and we just talked about things and he helped me feel SO much better about being here.  President Price is the man, and he has such a strong testimony.  It is hard to explain, but I truly felt a burning in my chest.  Older members of this gospel can be the most humble, spiritually uplifting people you've ever met.  They are people who are so wise and filled with so much love, and I hope to have the same wisdom and love when I am older.
We have been told that we can do anything on the internet as long as it is on LDS.org.  We found Johnny Lingo on LDS.org and definitely watched that as soon as we found out.  For those who haven't seen it, it is about some stud, Johnny Lingo, who lives on an island and when it comes time for him to take a wife, everyone thinks he is cheap and blind. It cracks us up, and it makes me mad BYU didn't make more films in the genre.

Monday:

I got sick somehow yesterday, and I got a pretty bad headache.  Other than that, today went by pretty quickly.  Its the day before I turn 20 and I feel very old.  "Halfway to 40!" Elder Dallimore said. UGH haha
We also watched Johnny Lingo again today haha it is so good. And because it is my birthday tomorrow, we are definitely watching it again tomorrow.

Anyway, that's all for this week!  Here's a picture of my district, all wearing our Argentina ties!

Stick Pull?? 9/16 - 22

Day 20 and we still have not played a single game of stick pull.  Like it wasn't Joseph Smith's favorite sport or something... Like Joseph Smith wasn't the greatest Stick Puller of all time.

"Joseph beat Justice A. Morse (the strongest man in Ramus) at the stick pull WITH ONE HAND"

Tuesday:

The computers worked all day on P Day, and it was much better than last week.  We did laundry and we also got haircuts.  They do a good job at the MTC Barbershop, I told them I'd give them a five star Yelp rating in 2 years.

Wednesday:

I touched a phone today and I literally had trouble using the touch screen.  Hermana Barlow made me read a scripture from it.  We taught Maribel again and in the lesson of the Plan of Salvation there's a page with some lyrics from "I Am a Child of God" and when we got to the page, some kid outside the room started singing it.  We took it as a chance to testify of the Holy Ghost and she loved it.

Thursday:

We cleaned the stairs again.  After, we took a well deserved nap.  Basically all the MTC is for us is learn Bible Concepts through spanish.  We taught our teacher today and it went super well and I feel more comfortable with it.
We got a new teacher, his name is Hermano Wooden and I like him a lot.  He does not look a day over 20 but he has a really strong testimony and I find it very easy to learn from him.
I also got some new scriptures to mark up and I'm having a great time with that!

Friday:

One thing that I'm learning here is "dont be better tomorrow, just be better right now."  When every day is the same thing, it kinda helps to just be able to focus on being better.  I have a problem not wanting to talk in Spanish unless I know what to say, but I am trying to just start speaking and working on it.
There's a weird phenomenon here where people who have been here longer seem older, even though I am one of the older kids here.

Saturday:

Rod and I taught our teacher again as Hermana Bety.  Bety is someone she taught on her mission, and she is acting like her.  She said we did a good job, but can be better at having a unified lesson between the two of us working together.  It's so much easier in English and I constantly just wish I could use it.  Most kids who are in Spanish speaking missions took Spanish in high school, so I'm a little behind the curve. :(  A lot of my friends here like to joke around and tell everyone about how I went to USC for a year and "how cool is this guy" and it cracks me up because I just own it.  Go Trojans!

Sunday:

Elder Roderick and I gave the Sacrament Blessing today!  It went really well and President Price said it felt like we were his kids giving it for the first time and that he felt so proud.
President Price talked in Sacrament today! It was so powerful.  It felt like the past 2 weeks he has been unfolding his story to me.  He talked about his mom again.  She passed away, and when she did, President Price's heart was softened and he was looking for the correct church.  He found it.  He said that when he was growing up, she would often ask him if he knew what his purpose here on Earth was... Even when he was a little boy.  She asked him this throughout the years because she herself was lost.  This broke my heart.  He met with the missionaries when he was my age and they told him to read Alma 32 and 33 first, even though they don't normally do that.  I'll list them below.  President Price knew that his mom was no longer here, but that he would one day see her again.  He served a mission the next year.  He found that purpose that his mother was looking for.
Sunday Night Devotional was a musical!  The Nashville Tribute Band played a bunch of songs for us.  It was good, but I've never loved country...

27 But behold, if ye will awake and arouse your faculties, even to an experiment upon my words, and exercise a particle of faith, yea, even if ye can no more than desire to believe, let this desire work in you, even until ye believe in a manner that ye can give place for a portion of my words.

Below is a picture of Rod and me with President Price!  Love you all!

Anatomy of a DearElder Letter

Here's what a DearElder looks like ! They are all put together in the same one and if it goes over, then you get more than one letter!

Week Two! 8/9 - 8/15

Second week in the MTC

Tuesday:

First P- Day! We went to the temple today, and the spirit was super strong.  It also just mostly makes me appreciate the beauty of our world.  Lots of beauty on this here earth.  The email/internet server stopped working half way through so we got to email a little bit more later.  Neil L. Anderson came and gave Tuesday night devotional and it was great. He talked about a lot of things but one of the things I liked the most was "open your mouth no matter what.  You will be blessed."

Wednesday:

Today wasn't too great.  There are a lot of kids here in the MTC who are like unassigned MTC police.  They enforce rules that don't even exist and it drives me crazy.  Elder Roderick got a package from his mom and it contained TWO loafs of bread AND A TOASTER.  So we've been having some delicious toast pretty much every day since.  You know we got that Nutella.  I saw Elder Melville at dinner.  He's a great guy and he's doing well.  He's been in here a while and was talking about how crazy being here is making him.  I agreed but he was like "You dont understand... Watch me." and he just gripped his country fried steak and started squishing it.  I was laughing pretty hard.  It rained a little today and that was nice.

Thursday:

We cleaned the stairwell today in the main building, top to bottom.  The church saves like a million dollars each year just making the Missionaries in here do service I guess.  We had an asiago bagel for breakfast--toasted.

Friday:

Remember how I told you about the MTC police?  Well they were all out today and they found Elder Rod and me.  I was told to shave and he had to remove a bracelet he's been wearing for three (!) years (the tan line underneath is gnarly). Our investigator Mika became our teacher today (he was LDS the whole time?? (just kidding, we knew this day one)).  He's a really good teacher though, but he actually moves for Vegas soon so we wont have him much longer. Dang.  Sophie sent me another cute package with a card in it.  This card has a little doggie leaning out a car window with goggles on and it saved my day.

Saturday:

The way you last in the MTC is just by taking it day by day.  Just one day at a time.  There's getting less to write about already.  There teachers here can be frustrating, but the key is just going out of your way and loving them despite it.  And writing letters to loved ones.

Sunday:

Finally a break.  Sunday is truly a day of rest in the MTC.  The topic in Church today was "Enduring to the End."  After church, in priesthood, President Price (the President of my Spanish speaking district/branch) came in to our small class AGAIN.  This was pretty lucky because he is an amazing man and there are like 6 priesthood classes in our branch alone.  He converted when he was 19 and served a mission very soon after.  He talked about having a "perfect brightness of hope"  which is a very important Christlike attribute.  I truly believe in the power of hope.  "Sometimes you need to have a little faith before the hope can come."

We watched a talk for Sunday movie night.  Elder Bednar "Character of Christ."  It is my new favorite talk of all time.  Elder Bednar is an amazing speaker.  This talk focuses on what it means to turn away from man kind and to turn to Christ.  He also impersonates the Cookie Monster which is pretty funny.  One great quote, though I highly recommend the whole thing: "It comes a little day by day."

Monday:

I finally go to run today!  Elder Schelly and I (he hails from SoCal) ran around the track this morning.  Ten laps is a mile, so I have literally no idea how many laps I ran.  I stopped keeping track after 3.  We had a new investigator today! We taught this lady named Maribel.  She comes from Mexico and although her story is real, she is already LDS.  It's ok though, that's what we prefer.  She was the biggest sweetheart and we taught a 45 minute lesson on the restoration.  I had the biggest smile at the end.

--------------------

Anyway, here's a scripture of the week!  This one talks about Ammon which is always great.  "The light had infused such joy into his soul."  I truly testify that the light of the gospel has the magnitude of power described in the scripture.  It will set your soul on fire!

Alma 19:6

"Now, this was what Ammon desired, for he knew that king Lamoni was under the power of God; he knew that the dark veil of unbelief was being cast away from his mind, and the light which did light up his mind, which was the light of the glory of God, which was a marvelous light of his goodness—yea, this light had infused such joy into his soul, the cloud of darkness having been dispelled, and that the light of everlasting life was lit up in his soul, yea, he knew that this had overcome his natural frame, and he was carried away in God—"

First Week 9/3-8

Wednesday:

First day in the MTC is really fast paced filled with smiling faces telling you exactly where to go.  I got my name badge and my books and I didn't even have time to think.  Which is probably a good thing. 850 new people got here today!
We went to drop my luggage off at my room 409 and I had my first Spanish lesson of the MTC from Hermana Barlow--she didn't say a word in English.. Classic.  She is really nice and its awesome to see someone teach with the Gospel.  I met my Comp(anion) later.  He just graduated high school from Highland and he's a pretty sweet dude!  His name is Elder Rodrick and his best friend's dad took a selfie with me at the temple right before I came in.
My friend Dan (love you Dan), told me that old missionaries hide stuff in the vents for the next missionaries to find!  I told my roommates this and we found a bunch of sweet stuff, including a Christmas tree!

Thursday:

There is so much faith here in the MTC that we can become great and it's really awesome.  My comp and I feel like we're kind of on our own to figure out all the details of the MTC.  We have so many classes, and they're all at least 2 hours long.

I learned how to bare my testimony is Spanish today!  Yo testifico que El Libro de Mormón es verdador!  Our rule book is called "The White Bible" and it's mostly composed of rules made because of problems that Missionaries have had in years past.

I'm still figuring stuff out, but everyone says "just make it to Sunday!"

***MTC = Make The Change

Friday:

Today was Pizza Friday.  It was underwhelming despite the hype.  The food here isn't necessarily bad, its just Cafeteria food that has to be able to feed 2,500+ (!) people.. But we all pretty much agree that it's pretty good food.  My roommates are Elders Poulson, Allen, Gerhke, Whiting, and Roderick.  They're all super great kids, and we're all going to parts of Argentina!
We had our first exercise time today, and we played volleyball with Elder Paulson and Elder Dallimore who live around me in Sandy. We also got to play with some sisters which takes away from the onslaught of testosterone I was getting used to.
Elder Rod and I taught our first lesson to an "investigator" today! All en Español!  It went poorly, but we will keep working hard.  "Hermano Mika" was his name.  I sent and received a package from Sophie today too! Hers was super cute and all the Elders in my room got mad jealous.

"Fe es como una semilla"  -- Faith is like a seed.

Saturday:

"Everyday feels like a Tuesday in the MTC" -- Elder Roderick

We played some volleyball after a little personal study.  You can't keep track of score so we joke around sometimes after someone gets a point and say "that tied the game, elder!"  The game is allegedly always tied.  I get a big kick out of it ahah.
Spanish was hard today and my tongue hurts.  We had a sub today and he inspired me by telling us to envision coming off the plane....suit in tatters... shoes with holes... and just confidence that you worked so hard.

Sunday:

I was the first person to speak in testimony meeting right now!  I bore my testimony on teaching with the love of Christ.  Its so different than how the world teaches.  I also talked about how the MTC believes in humanity.  The spirit was super strong.
We had a devotional from the UVU president--Matthew Holland.  Last time I heard him speak, he talked about Abe Lincoln haha so I was excited.  He spoke about the strength of the BoM, and how true it is, from a historical/worldly standpoint.
Apparently the MTC has movie night, which is pretty sweet.  We watched "Ephram's Promise" which was pretty much the corniest movie I've ever seen.  A kiss happened and the MTC lost their collective minds.  Anyway, I made it to Sunday!

"Keep on praying and go to work"  -- President Hinckley

Monday:

Today is the day before P-day and it went pretty fast.  We taught Mika again and it went a lot better.  It's hard to stay focused working, our schedule is pretty much, Wake up, exercise for 40 minutes, get changed, go eat, study for 3 hours, eat, study for 3 hours, eat, study for 3 hours, and then an hour before bed to write in journals and get ready for bed.
Everyone is getting closer with each other, though and that's a great thing because we all have so many stories about our friends and stuff that we can share.  It's great and I have a lot of respect for everyone here!
